I'm going to be building a new computer soon, and I'm deciding between getting the upgrade verion of XP Pro (which I can get with Office XP for $99) or the full install which is $143. I currently have a legit copy of 98se which I would use, then upgrade to XP Pro. I'm just wondering if there are any known problems with upgrading that I wouldn't have to worry about if I just went with the full install. Also, is it at all difficult to convert from FAT32 to NTFS file system? This would be done right after upgrade so nothing else would be installed.

Others can confirm, but a new install is possible with just the upgrade version AND a 98se CD.

So, I can do a fresh install with just the upgrade disk? I'm assuming that would be something along these lines:
    -Boot computer
-XP disk in drive, run setup
-XP asks for previous copy of Windows
    -put in 98se disk
-checks, accepts, asks for Windows XP disk
    -put disk in
    -sit back and enjoy

Is that basically how it would work?

Do not install win98 at all. Just do a fresh install of Windows XP. With new machine all hooked up. Boot cd in cd rom make sure first boot device is cd rom then it will find it, it will say press any key to boot from cd..... press any key then install make sure you format then install so you get a "clean" install. This is best so all drivers and everything else from Windows 98 is removed. Otherwise you could have problems.

    just my .02
