Windows XP password problems please help

    My friend forgot his administrators password to log into windows on his laptop. How do u reset the password? Please help thanks

    I don't think you can actually reset it (since that would be wildly insecure). However, I remember there used to be a Linux bootdisk that you could download that would retrieve the password for you. I think it was for Win2k, but there might be one out there for XP.

    used to have a boot disk for just this, but sadly i lost it.....search around im sure its still out there

    Are you talking about Knoppix?

    Is it possible that your friend has more than one account on the machine with administrative rights? He could log in as the other account and then reset the first account's password.

    I wonder if you could put the laptop on the network, and even though you're not logged in, use LC5 (l0phtcrack) from another machine to crack the password, assuming it is weak enough.

    Nope, it was just a floppy with a barebones linux system and a program to get passwords from Windows.
