So i'm sitting here on my windows xp machine and notice it running sluggish, all the while my mouse is switching from a normal mouse to a hourglass thing every few seconds. I see windows is trying to finish an update(in my icons on the bottom right windows update says Downloading updates: 96% complete. Anways, it has been like that for 2 days now, and when I restart it just starts doing the same crap.

I tried to go to the windows update page and when i tried to download the updates off that page, that download would also get locked up. I can't seem to ctrl-alt-delete and end the update either. Any help???

btw, restarting doesn't do anything and when I do system restore it trys to do the update right when the computer starts...

    Start
    Control Panel
    Automatic Updates
    Turn Off Automatic Updates
    Reboot

Then try to do it manually, and let me know.

Hmm...i just did all of that and it didnt fix anything. I no longer see the icon in the bottom right that it is doing anything, but the hourglass continues to pop up. And when I look in the Processes window of crtl-altl-del update.exe keeps popping up then disapearing at random spots on the list. I dont know what the hell windows is trying to download, but when I did the windows update on the update page, it says

"downloading 26.60mb of 26.70mb." The bar is all the way across like it is complete. After it downloads and says 26.7 of 26.7, it will go, downloading 26.7 of 26.8mb. And it has been doing that all day. Started at 7mb. WTF is going on here...

Try doing the non-express update. And do each update one by one until you find which one is lagging you to shit.

    50 processes, eh?

start from a clean boot and don't open anything else, kill any unnecessary processes (realsched.exe, etc. :hsugh: ) and do them one at a time

yeah trust me I don't know what half of that shit is. I'll try this after class today..

Is there any way to basically clean my entire harddrive without the windows xp disk? After 2 years of having this machine at college I have quite a lot of unnecessary shit on here...(don't know where my xp disk went)

seeing that you have 50 processes running (most of which you are unclear as to their function) i kinda wondered if this might not be a windows update thats messing with you, the first link i found when looking for update.exe is this:
    http://www.2-spyware.com/file-update-exe.html

    however also note: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/deployment/winupdte.mspx

my vote is for the first of the two since you have so many processes running, and the typical tell tale sign of system slowage seen with spyware.

considering the closeness to the windows update (Update.exe) naming convention, you may be seriously screwed OS wise and have to try a system repair.

So basically...my system might be fucked?

Ok i'm running spyhunter to see if it finds anything. I had been using ad-aware and thought that took care of everything, apparently not.

    I'll keep you updated...

hmm...well the program they used cost money to actually delete the files, but it did not come up with any update.exe . Only one program called exul.exe i believe.

Right now I'm really not too sure what to do. I just want to bash all the spyware creators

    try hijackthis http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html

it's free and thorough - sometimes too thorough, so be careful what you delete
