arite well once again i'm having problems...this is rare too cause if something comes up i can usually find ways to fix it. But with ubuntu and now this i feel helpless:wtc:. Anyways the problem is this: I had ubuntu installed then formatted and put WinXP Pro back on. now however i cannot install SP2 and a couple other updates. Everything downloaded, then when it tries to install SP2 it gets to the part where it says "checking product key" and stops there, no errors no nothing it just stays there, until i end it with task manager. I have a genuine copy of Windows because it came w/ my comp i have the cd and everything. Before i had ubuntu on here it had SP2 installed...so... anyone got ideas?

So you JUST reinstalled XP and tried to apply SP2 without installing anything else? Do a long chkdsk on the hard drive. I had a system once that seemed to work fine until the owner installed SP2. Then the system went to shit. I reformatted and immediately applied SP2 and it too went to shit. I finally found out the hard drive was developing bad sectors. A new disk fixed it.

SP2 should be the first thing you install after installing Windows. Less chance of something else conflicting that way.

It would be best to slipstream SP2 into your existing XP CD-ROM. But short of that, install SP2 from the big 270MB installer file. Download SP2 and put it on a CD since its a good thing to have around anyway. So:

    1) reformat and install XP
    2) install SP2 from the CD
    3) run Windows update and get all of the post-SP2 updates (about 60 of them)
    4) install all of your drivers and apps.
