So my friends computer went freaky on her, and now when you boot it, it delivers the good news: c:\windows\system32\hal.dll is missing or corrupt, and windows cant't start.

So my first thought is to just replace it from the winxp disc from recovery console, so after googling it, once in recovery console I should just do the following: expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll and life will be peachy.....wrong Access is denied. I think I need to change some access via the set command....now for the fun part, you can not enable the SET command outside of windows...so seeing as I can't boot into windows to enable it am I dicked?

I thought about doing a repair install, but it makes me nervous. So I wanted to look at all other possibilities first

are you suggesting I use it to get the files off, or attepmt to reinsert the missung/corrupt. Never used knoppix, so I am not familiar with the procedure, but have used linux moderately

Use it to get the files off.

And yea it might make sense to consider using a GNU/Linux distro for good too. I've never installed KNOPPIX, but Ubuntu and FC5 are pretty good. For a laptop I wouldn't touch Ubuntu since it doesn't ship NetworkManager unlike FC5.

edit: maybe you'll be able to restore the file in KNOPPIX either, my GUESS is yes.

Ive installed gentoo on this machine as a dual boot with xp, but I have the grub mount points off for the gentoo partition. I also have openbsd on my other computer, running a server :)
