ok so this is the SECOND time this has happened to me!

the first time was about 2 weeks ago.. windows updated itself over night and i woke up and the little internet icon in the taskbar showed me as being 'offline' but i'm not really... AND when i tried to play a music or movie file, it brings up the message "Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

i couldn't get any help nor figure it out myself so i just reformatted and everything was fine until this morning... the same thing has happened!

all other sounds work.. like when i stream them from online or something.

anyone have any ideas?? i'm sick of this happening and i know its from windows updates

Did you try rolling back your NIC drivers? I had to recently roll back my video card drivers after windows tried to update them with something that wasn't for my card.

Not sure what could have happened, but go into Control Panel and tun off automatic updates... I prefer to have mine download and then notify me when they are ready to be installed.

I don't see anything wrong with it except the fact that I don't like my machine being rebooted without me knowing.

Yeah, but lately microsoft has turned faggot on that, no matter what you do.

I've been keeping mine on notify me, so that I can choose which downloads I want, one at a time.

Well they fucked it up (this is across multiple installs, btw) and now if you leave it set that way once you do your downloads, it will load the exact same list back up again.

So I figure what the heck, i'll set it for download, but let me decide when to install.

That way I can still pick and choose.

The dickheads fucked that up now, too. Now it downloads them, and doesn't give

you the balloon to click on. Instead, they are trying to sneak all the downloads by me

when I shut down. I had it happen to 2 different installs in the past several days.

I really want to smash somebody in the face at microsoft for this.

Seriously, though. Just get the klite codec pack and say bye bye to windows media player.

The cocec pack comes with a hacked version of media player classic that is loaded with everything you need.

And the codecs play just about every file type right out of the box.

Meanwhile some law firm needs to take on microsoft for fucking peoples computers up with their shit updates.

So what do you use? Btw, I've seen you post that you use the klite codec pack.

So why not use the media player that comes with it?

That damned thing has settings for everything.

It's a piece of shit. Prolly a good reason NOT to use it.

WMP is my preferred player for convenience, and that so much other software uses the WMP libraries, so klite is still useful.

If I need something to play a hard format, I use VLC. I just wish they'd actually fix the gay seeking problems.

I love MPC for for video, mainly for the UI and low memory usage. It plays almost anything, so it's very rare for me to need VLC for a video file. I love being able to disable everything in the interface and leave a video as "always on top" while I can do other things while still being able to drag and resize it. Multiple instances are good, too.

I only use it for video though.. The minimalist UI isn't very suitable for music and audio books.

    MPC > VLC with non-default skin > *

    404 - pos, not found.

I've had no problems getting it to work with all my files.

Speaking of Windows Update - we had one at work that when installed it would reset your computer if you RDP'd into it. Took me awhile to figure out what it was. Of course it was some random update with no real description.

Oh and don't get me started on Windows Desktop Search. No - no - we don't use any resources while you're using the computer. Really? Then why can't I even bring up C-A-D to figure out what the hell is hogging all my resources even though I'm in the middle of using my computer?

When you did the reformat, did you install the proper sound drivers?
