    http://arstechnica.com/journals/mic...windows-7-build-7000-outperforms-vista-and-xp

So, they did some "real world" benchmarking with Windows 7 and compared it to XP and Vista. Supposedly faster than both in most tasks so far. That sounds interesting.

On a side note, is anyone trying Windows 7 yet? I'm not asking how to do it, where to get it or anything like that. If you think the question is inappropriate for the forum still though since it is illegal to run Windows 7, then please ignore it. :)

Man, this is the fist MS OS that im really pumped for. I just hope the 64 bit version is as supported as the 32 bit.

i just installed the beta. its pretty decent so far. i like the media center, although it doesn't support one of my tuner cards or my hdhomerun yet. although i haven't tried any drivers or anything - so thats probably my problem
the media center does not play mkv files, doesn't even show them. also, it crashed when it tried to play an x264 mp4 file. vista media center could play both formats, but required some codec packs to get it working.

as far as startup speed, seems about the same for winxp. faster than vista.

well, I wouldnt really hold it against windows 7 for not supporting your tuner card. Its still in beta testing, after all.

How did it perform, whats are your specs?

Just installed, posting on it now. Specs: P4 2.8C, 1GB RAM, RADEON 9800 Pro. Coming from XP it seems to run just as good if not better.

It's illegal to run Windows 7? I thought they wanted people to run the beta so they could report bugs and problems and what not. You know, test it.

The beta is only available to a select group of people. Not the general public.

Some are claiming that MS purposely leaked this beta to build hype though.

How is this any faster or better than vista?

I am using it right now and I can barely tell the difference, besides the handful of new GUI features it feels exactly the same, if I turned off the UI I would have no idea which one I was using.

Then again vista never felt slow in any way, and I didn't really have any issues with it at all... so since this is just like that it is fine, I just don't see an actual improvement. I just don't understand why everyone is so excited about it... it works fine, so does vista, so does XP... the only difference any normal user would ever notice is in the visuals... which does NOT define an OS.

i don't know how it is faster. i just linked an article where someone actually did testing. one of the things i did hear about Windows 7 is that they've reduced the hardware requirements for running the OS pretty significantly. supposedly it'll be able to run on a netbook which is something that Vista can't really do.

read the article though. it explains how it is faster than vista.

yeah, as gearhead wrote, this isn't an open beta. most likely, anyone here is running it after finding it on a torrent. i guess though that my question is legit because it can't be certain if anyone here is actually part of the beta program.

Even if they are a part of the beta, discussing it here would violate their NDA (all closed MS betas have one).

That said, this build, or one just after it, will go to public beta early next year, and MS is not saying jack about it leaking, so I wouldn't worry about it. As long as no one posts links to download it or anything like that I think we're OK.

Now, as for the beta itself, it rocks. I have it running in a VM and to boot up it's using about 512mb of ram (1GB available to the VM, so about 1/2). That's not bad. It's fast. Feels faster than Vista, more like XP was. Also interesting to see the Ribbon bar in wordpad and paint. I'm not a fan of the new taskbar but I'll learn to live with it for the performance improvements in the OS.

It felt pretty snappy when I was running it. I liked it a lot.

I read that article and the unanimous consensus is that it is faster... but I just don't see it. Vista is just as fast on my machine, the way I have it configured. This is of course by feeling alone, I am not timing things, but if you have to time the difference in order to even know they exist they are pretty much worthless

Oh well, it runs great, and it did install much more easily.

Anyone have any info on the system restore in Windows 7? Vista would grab ridiculous amounts of space for restore points. I hope this isn't the case on 7

yeah, the article isn't the greatest. all he lists are which completed 1st, 2nd and 3rd, but he doesn't provide any numbers beyond that. so, we don't know if windows 7 is running 1, 5 or 10% faster than XP or Vista. we just know that it is faster.

I just installed it on a XPS M1210. It's only temporary because I'm getting a new HD for it. However I did notice one thing. I'm connected to a network that is barely in my range and that has never been that fast. However I'm blasting through pages on Windows 7 running IE 8 beta. I don't know if the network picked up or if IE 8 and Windows 7 are the cause. Just thought I would share.

betas are not usually as performance oriented as final builds.
