I'm updating my OS to XP, but I've heard the XP upgrade doesn't reformat your computer, it just upgrades it to XP.

Should I reformat with the windows 2k CD and tehn use the XP upgrade CD? Keep in mind I want to refomat and end up with XP

Always reformat and load a new OS clean. It doesn't matter what version of Windows you're upgrading. Boot from the XP CD, delete your existing partition, create a new one, and load windows.

just follow the instructions, it will prompt you during the install to insert your 2000 pro cd, it will verify the cd and then keep going with the xp install.

From what it sounds like I need to have 2k/Me/other shit installed first before I can pop in the XP CD and "upgrade" to XP

I know that, but my question is, will that reformat my computer? Because I've heard using an upgrade CD doesn't.

The upgrade CD does whatever you tell it to do. If you launch its setup from within Win2000, it'll upgrade your 2000 to XP without reformatting. If you boot from the XP CD, you'll have the ability to delete and create partitions just like the OEM or full retail CD. DAN513 is correct: You can do a full clean install from the XP upgrade CD. You'll just need to have a copy of an older Windows handy to show it as proof of you upgrade eligibility. You DO NOT need an older OS installed first.
