My father has a Winchester model 1892 that belonged (i believe) to his uncle. I'm holding onto it for a while and trying to figure out if i should take out a supplemental plan on my homeowners insurance to cover it. Do you guys have any idea what it might be worth or where i would take it to have it appraised?

Looking at the NRA rating standards i'd say its somewhere between excellent and fine. All of the markings are clear as day to read, its never been refinished (as far as i know) and its spent the vast majority of its life in a leather saddle scabbard. Any advice would be appreciated. :hsd:

ah, thanks...reading now. I had paged through a couple wiki-answers links without much success.

Hmm, sounds like i'll need to get it actually appraised since there are so many variables. Its in better shape than his $1200 example and its also a 44-40, i would need to check on the barrel length though.

if anyone is curious, i plugged the serial number into a search and the rifle manufacture date is 1892, so its a first year run i guess. Pretty cool to have a 100+ year old rifle.

    Thanks man. :bigthumb:

I think the last time it was shot was about 5 years ago and it was dead on accurate, so i'm assuming the bore is in good shape. Before that though it probably wasnt shot for 30+ years. My grandfather used it for deer hunting, but he only hunted once in a blue moon.
