Got a stupid question. My mom was given a computer but windows is password protected on it and the password given to her doesn't work. Is there a way around it? I've tried loging in as admin but that password was changed and the guy doesn't know what it is. Any ideas?

Wait a damn minute. How does the guy who gave her the computer not know ANY of the login passwords?

    This is a scam.

Maybe the benefactor gave the OP's mother a stolen machine, yeah, or maybe the OP is making up a story to find out how to break into someone's computer. The exact circumstances don't really matter though, all that matters is that nobody with a legitimate claim to that computer would somehow lose track of ALL the login passwords.

Pardon me while I channel Jolly, but there's no reasonable scenario in which the OP (or his mother) could have a legitimate need to break into this computer. We shouldn't be helping him with this one.

Honestly, it's not hard to break into a computer with which you have physical access to. Whether we help or not (unless the person has no idea whatsoever) he'll get in one way or another.

Unless the entire drive (or the important parts of it are) then there is really no way to stop the break-in + loss of data.

I think you left out the word "encrypted", Bruticus.

I've had legit cases for using it - computer was installed, Admin password was lost and the other login name was completely corrupted.

I've had legit reasons to using it - bought a computer from a wholesaler that got it at a city supply auction.

But you'd have to wipe it anyway, so why bother breaking in?

What if they didn't give you a recovery disc?

It was less about breaking in and more about not having to reformat, they had already reformatted the disk anyway (it was a city computer). I just didn't want to have to sit through getting a WinXP disk, reformatting, blah blah blah.

Wow, does it really take that long?

We have software called ERD at work that does a great job of this. Boot to the CD, run the Locksmith application and change whatever password you want.

OP - Plenty of good, legit suggestions. If you're still stuck, start a new thread.
