WILLIAMSPORT -- A Williamsport police officer accidentally shot himself in the left hand Tuesday after returning from firearms qualifying and training. Patrolman Sidney Gable was taken to Williamsport Hospital after the shooting in the basement of City Hall about 3:20 p.m. today.

Other officers were in the area but not injured and administered first aid, Capt. Raymond O. Kontz III said.

Kontz said Initial reports are that Gable was cleaning the .45-caliber service revolver when it discharged. Protocol calls for weapons to be unloaded before cleaning begins, he said. An investigation continues.

Gable was expected to spend the night in the hospital, police said

A dollar apiece at midway. Might should have gotten that 625 instead of the 60-15 I got. :o

I always though revolvers were one of those impossible to ND during cleaning because the first thing I do is take the wheel off

Guess cops can do just about anything though.....

My money is on the journalist fucking up and it being a Glock or other auto handgun. I don't think any dept's still issue service revolvers, especially in .45

Yeah, that did sound pretty fishy...

I wouldn't put anything past a cop though. People always think about them as the ultimate gun experts... but from what I've seen... They often don't practice near the degree of weapons safety that most of us do. Maybe carrying a gun as part of their daily job makes some cops too comfortable with them and gives them the illusion that they are beyond the normal gun safety protocol that the rest of us stick to diligently??

Also the ones that have never handled a gun before getting the job and only do it because it is part of their job.

Pretty much. Literally half could care less about carrying a gun and most of the remaining half only like the idea of having a gun and don't consider the serious routine that responsibility entails. Some do embrace it and get switched on, but for the most part, the reduction in America's firearms culture has been painful for police gun handling skills.

I think common sense calls for weapons to be unloaded before cleaning.

I've never seen a .45 revolver as an issue weapon.
