This guy at my gym stretches for like 45 minutes. (I usually stretch for 5-10) I asked why and He said stretching helps build faster.

    Is he wasting time?

    Dogcrapp camp believes in it.
If stretching does help recovery then he's right.
There's also the hyperlasia theory found to occur in birds.

I remember reading that it was found in swimmers too.
I'm just mentioning the theory. I'm iffy on it too... if it really is applicable to humans.... besides in VPX ads. ACtually argued with someone about it maybe on here who pushed it as fact.

I read that there was an Australian study recently that proved that stretching has no affect whatsoever on DOMS. Not really answering the question, just a tidbit.

I do it anyway - the placebo helps.

In any case it's best to stretch anyways, better to stretch and losen up than be tight and get hurt.

Learned that in Wrestling the hard way :hs:

I do it anyway to avoid injuries and increase flexibility. No use being so muscle bound you can't even bend down properly, is there!

I like to do about 10min of dynamic stretching before my workout helps warm up the muscles (ie gets blood going)

I'd support this, generally. If you're going to be doing any kind of maximal exertion, I think there have been studies that show that static stretching is not the best thing in the world for your muscles. I.e., don't do any intense static hold stretching before you run a sprint, for example. The benefits of dynamic or active stretching I think are pretty well documented, though.

I'd be curious to hear anyone else who has thoughts on active vs. static stretching as I think it's an important distinction.

I thought I read a study where stretching actually reduced output of the muscles :eek3:

    .

Static before working out is said to reduce output, whereas, dynamic is supposed to increase it.

Is stretching really necessary if you do a warmup set of 8 at about maybe 40-50% weight before you go heavy?

Dynamic stretching at the beginning of your workout, static stretching at the end.
