MMA will MMA ever produce a fighter (Mike Tyson) with this kind of athletic prowess?

or will we continue seeing *well rounded* fighters who square off in a cage or ring that usually degenerates into a bad kick boxing match, or lots of leaning on eachother. :hs:

Tyson had heavy hands but other, more skilled boxers proved how vulnerable Tyson was. Thing is, most people wanted to stand and go toe to toe with Tyson which was the WRONG thing to do. Stick and move gets Tyson everytime.

I respect MMA fighters more than Tyson because it's so much more dynamic than boxing.

Tyson was on the decline. just look at his unbelievable head movement in the early part of his career. he stopped doing that after Don King fired his trainer.

As for MMA being more dynamic, i'll agree that that USED to be the case where you had people who took their disciplines more seriously and had your classic striker vs grappler match ups (PRIDE), but these days you get UFC style athletes who practice a bastardized version of everything and excel at nothing :o

No question when he was younger he was a pimp but he quickly became a one trick pony where he'd just look to land to bomb and end the fight. Most of his competition stood there and tried to take it. They usually woke up days later.
I would argue that you are more familiar with MMA fighting so it the newness of it has worn off. You're not nearly as dazzled by their skills but they are very talented fighters.

No, Tyson was an incredibly talented inside fighter. He wasn't one dimensional at all. He had great defense, amazing speed, and huge power.

He was just a mental midget and broke down

How old is the sport of boxing? How old is the sport of MMA?

    Give it time.

no. who out there can KO a guy with a single kick like Crocop used to do with his K1 pedigree? Or Vovchanchyn with his punches?

Instead the new breed are guys like Rua who are *well rounded* so to speak but have ugly sloppy boxing, but win matches by overwhelming their opponents.

If you aren't "well rounded" you will get beat by your weakness, and won't prove shit with your expertise.

You're watching the wrong fights. Or are just ignorant of the skill involved. Stick to boxing.

I love watching clips of young Mike Tyson. I really wish that he could have taken a differant route so we could have seen him become even better.

what the fuck are you talking about? MMA has become a SPORT, not a SPECTACLE, thats why you have guys training hard to learn other disciplines to excel at their game. As the sport gets older, kids are starting not only to learn boxing/kickboxing/bjj/wrestling and then adapting their game to MMA, they are learning the sport of MMA. i'd rather watch that then to see a pure bjj guy fucking helpless on his feet not even knowing how to set up a takedown against a kickboxer who once he hits the ground gets a fucking seizure because he doesn't know what to do.

MMA is like the Decathlon you have to be reasonable at most things to do well. In the past being top of the pile in one area would win you alot of fights especially BJJ but now everyone trains it. Tyson would have done well in MMA and would have been arguably the best HW boxer ever if he wasnt such a headcase.
