I have an HDTV ready tv, but I do not have a receiver. I would be able to use a progressive scan dvd player (i believe 480i?) right? And if i had an HDTV receiver, it would be at 1080?

Progressive scan is 480p and it will work if your tv accepts the inputs that your DVD player puts out.

you can use the dvd player on the tv regardless if you have an HD decoder or not. The HD decoder does NOT interface with the dvd player. The dvd player should be either hooked up to a component input on your receiver or on your tv directly

you can not 1080i dvd pictures yet...

The Samsung DVD-HD1000 upsamples dvd to 1080i through the component outputs. It's $1500 though and hard to find in the US.
