the apartment that i live in provides free wireless internet. all i do is plug in a wireless card and connect to the Airwave wireless network that they have set up. i think Airwave is not using WEP encryption...what can people do if not even WEP is used? can they sniff packets and find out my bank and email passwords?

Not necessarily, with bank transaction there is encryption... So you are as safe as you would be on a regular wired lan or cable broadband. But they can sniff packets for lots of other things in this situation, IM messages, etc.
