Make sure you take the time to read your WiFi access point/router manuals and lock your shit down.

I was sitting in my dining room and popped open the WiFi utility that came with my laptop and noticed that I have three neighbors with networks that are wide open. Lucky for them that I'm a nice guy...

I know the NETGEAR network is three houses down and across the street and I'm picking it up. I'd like to see what this would look like in a college dorm or dense apartment building.

There are tons of them around my school. So many people have no clue.

I just locked down my dad's wide open network when I was visiting them this weekend. That, and I had to sanitize his machine from the 128 different things that AVG found, the 28 things spy cleaner found and the 34 things that ad aware found. :hs:

I changed the admin password on one so they couldn't lock it down without resetting it. :big grin:

...or because most people set them up themselves and don't know any better.

you're actually paying extra monthly to roadrunner for something you can buy for less than $100?

Na - that just prevents them from using it, at which point they either replace it or read up on it. I figure as long as they can still use it, but for some "silly" reason they can't access the admin commands, some people will just say fuck it and live with it open.

I just add in their macs with mine. makes it so new computers can't get in but they can use it fine and I have a back up connection sometimes. Although I guess that does leave other people kinda out that want to use it. Hmmm, conscience getting the better of me right now.

The guy under me has a router with default everything and no security. When he gets too lound with his online game, I release his WAN IP lease.
