Ok I have this laptop Im working on, so it had win98 on it and wouldnt boot, the hd looked like mess. So I decided screw it I would restore it.

I booted from the Orignal 98 cd and did a restore, when it hit windows it crashed hard and couldnt find allot of files. It jumbled all files on the C drive command.com was now cmpwion.com the windows dir was something goofy like wdndowz everything was all over the place, EVERY file was renamed something goofy.

So I said screw it. I booted from a orignal 98 cd,

I did Fdisk and deleted all partitions
I repartitioned the C drive to MAX size
I full formated the C drive and copyed system files from the CD over
I Coppied all the cab files over to a dir C:\win98
pulled the cd out and rebooted now since i had system files on it , and cab files.
I did the install from the c:\win98 dir and it went through fine.

Windows boots up and crashes hard, it cant find allot of files
I boot again cant find system.ini
I boot again it cant find a command.com
I boot from the cd and look what the hell is going on. THE WHOLE FREAKING DIR is all jumbled again, command.com is now cmmdane.cmm, the win98 dir is now wnn88, everything is renamed, so when the computer starts a file calls the next and cant find it.

What the hell? What can this be, Im booting from an original WIN98 cd, and formating the hd and starting anew, no other disks or programs or anything are used, just a clean 98 install. Any Ideas? Ive never had this problem before.

    Wow that is kinda crazy...

Perhaps it is a virus hiding as a bad sector on the hard drive? :dunno:

I was thinking something allong those lines , thats why I fdisked it and deleted the partitions, there was a C and D drive created from that one physical drive. I deleted them both and started over with 1 primary drive, C , nothing else. I booted only from an orignal 98 cd to prevent contimindating my clean area. Any ideas what to do outside Fdisk, my buddy at school said it could be a faulty drive thats not writting info right but its FINE for a few boots and then starts slowly chanign file names. Whats a good approach guys?

    Replace the HDD.
Or try using a secure formatting disk that will write over the whole drive a few times with 0s.

    At the command line:

    fdisk /mbr
