I have been using DVD+R for some time, and they work perfect. Now I just bought a pack of DVD-R of the same brand and they wont get recognized, and there is no firmware upgrade for it.

um i wish i knew, its the one that came with this comp....HP DVD Writer 300c either ST3120025A or ST3160023A.

if u could tell me if that drive supported dvd-r that would be great

the ST part #'s you listed are your hard drives

From my search on the HP DVD Writer 300c, it's a 4x DVD+RW drive... It does not support DVD-R discs, which explains the behavior you have observed.

Is there any reason why you want to switch to DVD-R? You know DVD+R work with your drive, so just use those unless you have a NEED to use DVD-R. Either write the pack of DVD-Rs you bought off as a loss or sell them to a friend that can use them.

If you're gonna buy a new drive, look at the LiteOn or Sony drives. And if you're gonna replace one, get rid of the CD-ROM... Then you have two drives that can play DVDs and burn CDs.

well the thing is i need to use dvd-r's for something that i dont think im allowed t osay on OT.

and also i was reading somewhere that its best to use cd roms for reading cds and dvd roms for reading dvds to prolong the life of each. and also wouldnt my cd rom drive have a faster cd read speed than the dvd writer would for cds???

Are you so cheap you must resort to theft? Many people worked long and hard to produce that which you are attempting to steal. They should be compensated for the work they do. Your employer should stop paying you for the work you do since you don't seem to have a problem with not paying for services rendered.
