Why the exhausts?

I somewhat understand the hobby of tuning up japanese economy cars and trying to make them fast(and furious)....but why would you want to spend hundreds of dollars on a fart can that doesn't fit, makes yur car sound like a super loud riding mower, and drags on the ground over speed bumps?
I get a kick out of the guys with the 86 civic with a aluminum, 2 foot high wing, cut springs, and a coffee can tied to their exhaust. Then they drop the clutch at 5000 rpm, chirp the tires, then slam on the brakes at the next red light.

to each his own I guess...but I do like the sound of a big turbo with an obnoxious wastegate!

There is a difference between a fart can and a performance exhaust.

but yes i know where you are coming from....and btw, 86 riced civics dont chirp tires off the line.

I don't hate ricers, I've seen some really nice acuras, and one of the quickest cars I've driven is a mitsu 3000gt awd, that motor sounds sweet.

I just think some cars i see where I live are absolutely rediculous, and in very poor and tacky taste.

I thoght a ricer was any modified japanese car? Just like "rice rockets" are japanese crotch rockets. Does the term ricer only apply to the guys whose cars absolutley suck?

ya I don't get the big fart cans either. I have a 03 EVO and you can't even tell I have a full 3in exhaust on it. And with NA cars anything bigger then 2.25-2.5in is going to lose power on a 4cyl.

    Oh well

Well I suppose the people who buy them want to annoy the people who dont like them?

    Just my guess.

It's loud obnoxious teens thinking the sound gives them the extra power. I used to think that way until I felt real raw power.. ill never approve those damn fat cans again

I run a straight 3" exhaust. But it DOES give me more power :big grin: . As the saying goes "The best exhaust for a turbo car, is NO exhaust"

do they mean trying to make a civic fast? Or making them look and sound like shit?
    Or destroying the cars value?

ps. eclipse is a girls car. so are civics.

I do know a lot about tuning and cars in general I had a 16v gti in high school that I rebuilt the entire motor in, that was faster than any civic, handled better, had a sweet recaro interior, and people didn't laugh and point at me.

 No... He's 100% correct. When you add higher flowing exhausts to turbo cars, you have to monitor for boost creep. You can't just blindly add a 3" straight thinking it can cause no harm. Certain exhausts are suited for certain setups.

I agree with BoostedGSX. No exhaust can be too big or free flowing for a turbo car. The real issue is whether or not your waste gate is big enough.

Exactly my point. A 3" straight pipe mated to a turbo setup with too small of a wastegate is dangerous. This is something that is often overlooked by beginner tuners. So throwing around a catchphrase like "no exhaust is too big for a turbo car" is just ridiculous. That makes people believe that they can throw on any exhaust they want without doing any other tuning or monitoring.
