GUN Why my dad will NEVER shoot a gun in my presence again

So were at my dad's friend's house and I was shooting my M&P. Well, my dad decided he wanted to give it a go, so i put 5 rounds in it and gave it to him with the chamber empty. Went over the basics (keep your finger off the trigger unless you are going to shoot, treat it as its loaded even if its dry, etc) So he goes out, cocks it, and fires it four times.............

So I guess he thought he fired five. He turns around and rests the gun at
his side............ with his finger on the god damn trigger. I yell to him to take his finger off the damn trigger. He pulls a :dunno: with his finger still on the fucking trigger. Instead of telling him to shoot the last round, I let him figure it out. I told him to turn back around and rack the slide. Even after that, he still argued that what he was doing was ok. Needless to say, he will never handle any firearm around me unless he takes a god damn safety class. :ugh:

Or, you could just go through it with him and repeat the exercises until he's safe.

Agreed if he's cooperative. If he's nonchalant and a dick about it, then let someone else teach him.

i know i am not that smart, but i picked up the gun safety stuff the first time it was taught to me... why can some people never get it? :dunno:

i recently took a safety course for my pistol license (aussie laws) and there was at least 2 people out of the class of 9 that i plan to leave the range if i ever saw them there. one was a young guy about 19 who was just plain dangerous cause he thought he was so cool, and the other was an older guy that was too non-chalant about everything. i bet both would be afraid of a power saw, but they just couldnt get that guns were dangerous. :sad2:

he's not that type of guy.he has never owned a weapon and never plans to. so, in my eyes, he shouldn't have a reason to shoot again. he can be an in one ear out the other type of guy

first time i handed my dad my gun he dropped it! i managed to stay calm, i just picked it up, checked for any damage, and put it back in my case. i was like, "o.k. well i'll just put this back away"

My dad used to have a p89. The only time I ever saw him handle it, he treated it like it was a toy, managed to obliterate all four commandments in less than 4 seconds, even swinging the barrel in my direction. :ugh: I pretty much *made* him give it to me for graduation.

Needless to say, all the shooters in my family are on my mom's side

Yeah, I'm pretty much on my own when it comes to guns in my family. My mom doesn't like them, my dad doesn't care about them, and I'm the first son. Had to get started on my own :o

With the exception of me, and my older brother that passed away. All of the males of my family are either Active, retired Military or LEO. My father bought me my first handgun for me when I was 14 from my Uncle whom was an ex LEO, IPSC shooter (back in the 80's, HI state champion)and FFL.

how is it that your dad didn't teach you about firearms?

it just seems...natural... for your father to teach you about firearms to me :dunno:

We always had a couple guns around the house but my dad had them since he was like 16 and they probably hadn't been used in 20 years when I first asked to take them out. My dad was careful but didn't really know anything about guns.

I learned gun safety from a girlfriend's dad in high school. He'd take me and his daughter out every once and a while, I have him to thank/hate for getting me into guns (and never having any money for anything else.)

well, you had a father that was into firearms, i didn't.

he wasn't the typical throw the pigskin and birds and bees dad.

he taught me a shit ton about cars, and to be honest, i rather he did that than weapons

Oh I got the cars and stuff too :)

Our first introduction to guns was pretty ideallic in the NRA point of view. Sit
the kids down and explain the dangers and how to handle them when/if we
    did mess with them.

I'd always imagined that's the way it was......and everyone had a dog named
    lassie :dunno:

oh....if it makes you feel better....dad and I used to go waterskiing all the
time. I'd ski, he'd drive the boat. He ran me over once after I fell. Then yelled
at me for slamming my ski into the boat to try to get away.

beer...it's what's for breakfast, lunch, AND dinner :dunno:
