Why isn't my new Airport card working beyond 5 feet of my wireless hub...?

So I just picked up an Airport Extreme card from Apple, installed it, and have been thoroughly confused. When my ibook is on the table a few inches away from the router, I get iffy signal strength ranging from 1 bar to 3, but never full strength.

Beyond 5 feet of the router I get at the most 1 bar, but usually zero. At 10 feet I never get any signal :squint:

I tried checking to see if I didn't install it correctly, but everything looks fine. I'm using a 1 ghz G4 ibook that's not even a year old and has never had any problems. Does anyone have any advice as to what I should try? :hs:

pop the keyboard and make sure the antenna is inserted all the way into the card. this happened to me recently when i got my new HD installed. if that doesnt work, make sure the airport base station and the airport card are on the same channel. if that doesnt work, you might need to check the antenna that runs on the side of the monitor.

let me know if any of that helps.

Maybe someone is using a microwave or phone nearby? Or maybe the problem is with the router?

It sounds like that little wire for the antenna isn't connected correctly, or perhaps its defective? You should certainly have more range than that.

I'll try opening it up again and fiddling with the antenna wire. Last time I opened it up I just made sure the card itself was plugged in properly.

Also, I'm not using an airport base station, I'm using a Microsoft router. But the router itself worked fine with my brother and his laptop. Hopefully it's just an issue with the antenna :hs:

Yeah, the antenna wasn't plugged in all the way. Took a bit of pressure, but I got the little guy to go in. I didn't even bother walking around the house to test it out, I can see my neighbors networks on my menu :p
