It is a g4/400 with 896mb of ram running 9.2.2 It is extremely slow surfing the net. It takes me about 10-20 secs just opening a webpage. I have a 1.5mb cable modem so I don't know what the problem is. It seems even slower than using a dial up. When I use my Dell 8100 laptop running xp it will load up webpages 20x times faster. This shit is pissing me off. I know that the computer is old but it shouldn't be this slow just surfing the net. I just downloaded the latest verison of explorer. I tried turning virtual memory on and off. I've tried increasing the memory to explorer, what else can I mess with?

This sounds weird, but try using Mozilla, or another browser and see if that solves your problem.

Doesn't help that M$ stacked the deck w/ the Win32 version of IE, with all its prefetching crap it does. Bottom line, the internet is not really as fast as IE [for Win32] makes it out to be.

Test your speed at dslreports.com and post the results here. I can't offer much advice except try using mozilla or chimera and see if you get better results.

You could try running a disk defragmentation program as well.

I get 1.4 and 1.3mb when using the mac and a I get 1.5mb using my PC. Disk frag looks ok and I ran norton systemworks on it. I'll try using Mozilla and see if that helps.

that's pretty damnfast speed. Not that big of a diff between the pc and mac speed.

hmm...is you PF usage really high when you open up your web browser?

You sure it's not a DNS issue? I mean sounds like it's banging itself up against the wall before pursuing down another path. If I'm right, a straight file download should not take any longer, but surfing will seem like it's taking forever.

But When I switched to Mozilla it sped up some, if it was a DNS problem wouldn't I still have the same problem? :dunno:

Not necessarily - let's say the primary DNS was not working, Mozilla could be monitoring the lookup and decide to reroute to the 2nd DNS server. But I have no idea really - I don't work with Macs at all - it was just a thought.

I use a Mac at work and the internet is slow as fark! The computer freezes slightly everytime it queries a page too.

I've used Moz on both PC and Mac and it's faster on the PC (in terms of rendering). But Moz is shit slow when it comes to the dynamic GUI.

My dad is trying out Mozilla on his two macs. An old powermac 8600 and a dual G4. And noticed a huge difference on the G4 and a slight difference on the 8600

If you're not using OSX that could be the problem (OSX is a giant improvement over OS9 in all respects).

I found that Safari on a G3 350 mhz? with 1 gig ram was slower than using IE.

my friend's mac is a hell of a lot slower than my pc on the internet even though its a faster computer in general

i went on his computer yesterday and it seems that it loads up every single picture every time you click on any webpage...like say you're browsing ebay...well you click on an auction and it doesn't keep any of the pictures in its memory so you click back and it has to reload all of the pictures...then you click on another auction and it doesn't have any of the non-auction specific pictures saved and it has to reload those

just my theory...not sure if its right...just something i noticed last night

I have the same computer. I'm using X with Safari, it's fast as hell. I'm not sure what that could be. :dunno:
