    emergency wilderness rescue, thats why

Have you ever talked to a helo using a cell phone, HAM, etc. - I'll just say, you may - then again maybe not - be surprised at the COMM capabilities, especially of the mil.

If it's a SARWOD (that's Search And Rescue Way Out Dere), the LZ will have to be improvised.

Say for instance, you need EXFIL due to a problem, and you're on the side of a wooded hill due to the increased effectiveness of your COMMs/etc.

Your batts have just died in the radio, but your handy beacon is still beaconing (new word for the day).

The glorious boys in their black machine hover, but you realize they can't land, and can't drop anything for you to tie to.

So they fly off about 1km to the base of the hill to a small clearing. You realize that's the pickup point.

You take a bearing on the LZ, and start down the hill - into the woods. The trees obscure the LZ.

So - without the compass, you would not have had the opportunity to take a heading on the LZ, and without the compass you will not be able to Nav to the LZ.

Instead of an obvious mil op, you can imagine a civ scenario:

You're on the side of a hill, and use a mirror (you do have a signaling mirror, right?) to attract the attention of the rescue folks.

They fly over, but you realize they can't land.

So they fly off a distance...

10-4, 73s, and perpetual erections my fellow ops

Or you could do what they teach you in basic woodsmanship 101 and once you spot a resuce vehicle and establish that they have seen you, you sit on your ass and wait for them to get to you.

Also, if you have a compass on your person and know how to use it well enough to navigate to a fixed point, and still managed to get lost and require rescue, once they save you shoot yourself for being fucking stupid and stay out of the woods.

    mf101 doesn't need a compass, so neither do I.

Based on my experience doing search and rescue, once someones sees you, sit the fuck down and we'll come get you.
