seems like it would be effective to throw and elbow or punch from your back to disorient/distract the guy.

atleast at the ammy level, i know that pro fighters probably wouldn't be fazed

i think they should do a striking blow both ears to disorient, then they can use their commando disarm technique to finish them off

"Downward" elbows to the top of the forehead are horribly underused

in general arm punches don't do much damage. can't get your hips and core into the punch, but of course there are those fighters who go against the standard and make it work.

those spike elbows on the other hand are vicious and I endorse them wholeheartedly

I thought downward elbows were illegal on the top of the head? @ Joe Rogan at the end of this clip though.

downward as in from the direction of a clock going from 12 to 6.

12 being a constant direction, represented by the ceiling or sky.
    6 being the mat.
it does not matter what position the fighters are in, apparently they dont want the elbow strikes assisted by gravity.

I took Physics in High school and college, but can someone explain how gravity is going to effect it that much more? I understand the weight of the opponent while standing, but I don't see how much it is reduced though. Elbows are sharp and will usually cut.

I didn't know about the 12-6 though lol.

im not here to defend the reasoning to you, just explaining the rules as i heard them from herb dean and big john.

however, big john and herb disagree on the interpretation of "back of the head". big john uses the chuck liddell mohawk rule, where he allows strike to the side of the head that isnt covered by hair in the rear.
herb, calls everything behind the ears as back of the head.

i like big john's interpretation better.

Supposedly downward elbow strikes are illegal. But nobody ever gets called for them.

That is such a load of crap. It may be the way the referees choose to interpret the letter of the rule, but it's clearly not in line with the spirit of the rule.

It doesn't. The difference is negligible. It's a b.s. misapplication of the rule.

I completely disagree with that rule - I think it's a perfectly valid strike - but it's the rules and should be enforced.

you can spike with more force and put your bodyweight into it if you do it from 12 to 6.

go ahead try throwing an elbow when youre laying down versus standing up or on your knees. you can definately put more force into it from a standing or kneeling position. But I agree it is a stupid rule.

All elbow strikes are legal now. The 12 to 6 rule was apparently put in place to protect the spine / back of head, but now that the back of head rules have been clarified, they've allowed those elbows again.
