I'm in the market for a camera and am seriously considering a canon 40d. personally i've always thought olympus was the hot shit camera but everyone seems to use either canon or nikon. from looking online at camera specs olympus looks as good as the other two, as well as claiming to have the widest range of lenses available.

    example: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/com...debyside&cameras=canon_eos40d,oly_e3&show=all

40d vs. e-3. similar price range. the only thing canon has over olympus is a 3" screen and 6.5 fps vs olympus' 5fps. everything else i think is in olympus' favour. anyone care to comment?

    2.0 crop factor ftl
    not many available lenses
other than price point, no real reason to go with Oly

as for range, their 14mm is really a 28mm, so that not exactly wide.

i think widest range was the wrong choice of words for this forum. what i meant was highest number of available lenses. says so on their website. but you seem to be the bombdiggity around here mojito so i think i can take your word.

when they had their body + 2 lenses for a grand, that was a decent deal for someone thats just looking to take nice pics but not necessarily improve on their photography.

I just think you'll feel limited in expandability if you're looking to make it a serious hobby. :hs:

In body IS is a pretty good selling point IMO. I've been shooting with an E-510 to replace my Pentax and have nothing but good words for it.

Olympus having the widest range of lenses? They don't have nearly as many options. The system seems to have gone nowhere though. The 2.0x crop sensor certainly doesn't appeal to me, and they can't offer great value in their lenses either. It's a relatively confining system overall and offers nothing particularly compelling when you have more glass choices with the other camera brands.

the 4:3 crop and penchant for highlight clipping is what kept me away.

I use an olympus as a point and shoot and love it... it takes great pics. As an SLR it's just not mainstream enough, not enough support or glass.

I had one for 2 years or so because I was young and dumb. Its a really nice training SLR because it will tell you what settings to set at for certain situations.

Reasons I got rid of it include lack of glass selection, Olympus lenses are expensive as hell, and taking shots over 800 iso was just pure noise.

It got sold to a certain porn site based in Miami. :bigthumb:
