    Its safesleep...

I bet you bumped it after you shut the lid, before it went to sleep. Safesleep writes the RAM to the HD in case you lose power while it is in sleep.

Bumping it while it is writing to the HD trips the sudden motion sensor, stopping the HD, and causing the puter to get confused and restart. It started happening to mine after the 10.4.9 update.

If you dont plan on letting the battery die in sleep mode (worst case is it shuts off and closes everything you were working on if the battery does die), just shut off safesleep.

I did, and the problem went away...

    Go to apps/utilities/terminal

run terminal, and type the following:

    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0

It will ask for your admin password, type it in and hit enter.

    Then type:

    sudo nvram "use-nvramrc?"=false

    And hit enter..

CLose terminal, and you are done...

Another neat thing is, it will now sleep and wake-up MUCH faster since it does not read/write to the HD in sleep now. Also saves you memory, since it creates a file the size of your ram. So if you have 2gb like me, you will have a 2gb useless file floating around on your computer.

Thanks a ton for this info!

I've noticed some random restarts like this and it sounds like this is the cause.

no problem. it was driving me nuts at first when it started happening to me shortly after the 10.4.9 update.

I think it was either that update, or the battery update that caused it. But since I dont leave my computer in sleep for long periods of time, safesleep and the 2gb of memory it takes up are useless to me.

I never tried this fix and I had this problem twice in the same day on Wednesday. I'm going to do it this time.

I wonder if Leopard has this problem still?

 Great reply. This had only happened to me a couple of times, and I figured it was because I bumped my laptop after closing the lid. But I never knew how to stop it completely.

I lost some work because of that crap (moving my laptop from one room to another).
