Why does GM even bother with Northstars?

Ok, I realize I am not the smartest person in the world but I have a stupid question about pushrods.

GM has in its arsenal some amazing engines. Let's take the LS2, for example. It's compact, it's rugged, it gets good gas mileage, and it's relatively light. It makes massive amounts of horsepower.

Why does GM not just use the LS2,LS6 across all of it's large vehicle range rather than mess around with Northstars and the new Northstar replacement, whatever they're called?

GM uses the northstar platform to test new ideas before introducing them into the world class motors

    :dunno:

Thats a really good question. The STS V should have a LSX of some sort and not a SC northstar.

the few LSX powered cars I've driven didn't seem to be especially rough or too crude for a Cadillac.

I've wondered this myself. Maybe the LSx's aren't refined enough for the luxury market (too loud, bad consumption, bad manners)? Maybe they just cross-market engines and don't want to have the ever-popular OTism "pushrods suck" applied to thier luxury cars? :dunno:

Not all people who buy cars want the power (and noise characteristics) of an OHV motor. Plus some people are dumb enough to be sold on something just because they think OHC is naturally superior to OHV.

I've never understood why people use northstar motors as platforms for buildups. Way easier, and cheaper to use an LSx based motor
