Why do you have to apply to pad and then to car?

Why cant you squirt some on the car and spread it with the pad?

I'm talking about polishes, waxes, etc

Because less product gets slung around when you put it on the pad first, especially with a buffer because one you put the pad on the paint, then you can move it around a bit to spread the product before turning it on.

You also waste less product when you apply it to the pad.
