i've seen some people when interested in buying a gun, ask if it is a good deal and describe that the gun as never been carried in a holster.

    why?

because holsters can damage the finish and depending on the holster and how it was carried, subject the gun to sweat/body oils which can also damage the finish.

i wouldnt think finish or looks would be all that important... i know i dont give a shit what it looks like, as long as it shoots straight and feels good, im happy... :dunno:

I somewhat agree, if I'm buying it to carry, wear on it isn't going to deter me from buying it but if its something I dont plan to carry I might be more inclined to keep looking if it has alot of wear on it, unless its an awesome deal.
