GUN Why can't I hit plates at 250 yards?

Discussion in 'On Topic' started by Market Garden, Oct 17, 2009.

  1. Hmm... I wonder if this has anything to do with it. These will just have to be loaded as plinking rounds, and next time I buy bulk projectiles for my AR I'll have to spend a little more for quality. :hs:

use those for short range ammo. I looked at my hornady 55's and they are not quite that bad but nowhere near completely uniform. The back end pretty much get liquidfied by the burning powder anyway, so when it leaves the barrel it's molten lead and uniform I guess. One reason to go to the hpbt's is so you lead your barrel and comp less.

Honestly your CHS is likely a number of factors including ability, technique and the way your doping as much as the ammo. It's one thing to shoot from a bench with low heartbeat but to do so under stress and awkward positions is another thing. You got to dry fire from the dynamic positions you see in a match and do so with a raised heart beat. immediately after the match go back to the long range rifle stage and try to get a few shots off before they break it down. You got to work up all your holds before hand and commit them to memory.

With a 50/200 yard zero you generally are holding top of the plate at 250. If this is your long shot then your fine. I prefer a 25/275 zero with a screaming 75gr hpbt. The 55gr are weak sauce, If you bring that stuff to our matches down here your getting junked.

  11. Thanks for the advice. It turns out that I do know how to shoot a rifle. In fact, when I switched ammo at the match, I had no further problems. I am well aware of the idea of holdovers and the like, and I can assure you that wasn't the problem. The 50/200 zero works fine for me. The question posed in the thread title was rhetorical.

You two need to get a room and fight over who's going to be the power bottom.

LOL, You kids just need to shoot it out. When's the next multi gun/3 gun/practical rifle shoot in OREGUN? I thought they had some sort of big rifle match down there. Then drink some bear's.

  17. I stay out of his threads when I have nothing useful to contribute, he should do the same with mine.

RnR racing in Corvalis or MGM ironman in Idaho. It would not be remotely fair.

They make bears in drinkable form?!?!

Holy shit..... I gotta get me some of that? Think the local brewery would object if I still shot it in the neck first?

  20. I really don't give a shit about 3 gun. I like shooting for fun with people I like. I'm sorry if you feel you have to "prove" yourself at every opportunity. It's pretty clear that I know what I'm doing with a rifle, and I don't need you telling me what to do. The thread title was merely rhetorical, and the point of the thread was about how it's worth buying decent projectiles. I really don't care if you don't use 55gr at 3 gun matches, and I don't care if I'd get "junked" for showing up with them.

Now, shut up and get the fuck out of my thread.

 There is a difference between shooting, and actually hitting something. As a self proclaimed "precision rifle reloader" I would think you could do better. Nut up, you garbaged that match because in fact you can't shoot and it's not the ammo.

    Truth hurts, go practice

  24. Stage ranks in red were shot with the good bullets. Ranks in blue were shot with the cheap Winchester bullets. Draw whatever conclusions you want.
