When I go to the gym there is always someone going half way while benching, literally stopping a foot above their chest during their rep. I understand that this exercise may be isolating the triceps MAYBE, but there are definately better tri exercises then that. So why is this happening? Cheating?

There's really no need to go all the way down to your chest unless you're competing. A foot above is a little extreme, but if you concentrate the workload right you can give your shoulders and chest an awesome workout without ever touching the bar to your chest.

well thats acceptable, but ya your right for competitions there needs to be contact. Just boggles my mind that they see everyone else going all the way down whether they are within an inch or in contact but they continue to go half way...

little or none is being worked in your chest really, bringing it half way down really just works your tris, doesn't appear to be very effective.

I've noticed a lot of people at my gym lifting heavy weight, but only going down ~6".

Going down halfway I would think would stress the shoulders and try's more, the lower i go with the bar the more of a stretch i get with my chest.

I touch my chest (not bounce!) while doing bp... I just feel like I'm cheating myself otherwise.

I used to stop about 2" off the chest until I got into bench press power lifting comp's. They require you to touch chest so I just started training by touching chest. I do not compete nearly as much, but still touch chest out of habit.

yea, trust me if I could touch the bar to my chest I would. I don't know if its my real long arms or what, but it feels like my collarbones are going to explode...expecially when doing dips also.
