I have a pistol permit in NY to carry concealed, yet I could lose that right if I got caught in public with a switchblade?

What is the deal with knives? Why can I legally carry an automatic pistol, but not an automatic knife?

What is the legal difference between a finely crafted, Italian automatic and a Dollar Store box cutter?

You can legally carry a semi-automatic pistol.

Auto knives are banned because they're scary

because the people who make the laws are idiots. Same reason why nunchucks are illegal to carry. Because lawmakers think people are going to start kung fu fighting in the streets.

what makes no sense is how you define an automatic knife.

a switchblade with a push button is illegal, but my kershaw "assisted" open is legal and can be bought at walmart. its "torsion assisted" which is annother way of saying spring loaded. rather than pushing a button, you put pressure on the rear of the blade, which sticks out in a nub...a button if you will.

i can have it open within a fraction of a second of it leaving my pocket.

They aren't everywhere (including here in Ky). The laws regarding auto knives are possibly crazier than gun laws, with all kinds of strange municpality/city laws that in some cases contradict state/federal laws. Getting them across state laws is sporty at best. One of the reasons I got rid of my Microtech, as it was just too much of a pain to have.

Blame idiot legislators, and Hollywood for the auto-knife stigmas.

It all depends on were your perspective is. If you an enthusiast then the laws are pretty open on what knives you can have so long as it remains in a stationed area and not on the streets. If you want an auto knife just so you can flaunt it and use it in public then it will be pretty intimidating and look wrong compared to a box cutter. In a city, the only type of knife generally people should have are box cutters. The only ones who i even imagine having to use knives are those who work in manual labor type jobs were they need to cut rope, wires, boxes etc.

You will be well liked and your opinions well respected here.

Seriously through trying to legitimize these laws by acting as though the apperance or method of opening a knife has any effect on crime or safety is stupid.

WTF... so now I can't carry a knife because I work as a coder?!

Dude, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. It's a fucking knife, people use them for all sorts of reasons, regardless of what's on their W2's.

No fucking shit. Mine is used as a scraper, pry bar, screwdriver, bottle opener and all kinds of other shit.

What kind of pussy do you have to be to not understand a sharpened piece of metal, and why one would be beneficial?!

Depends on the day, but usually a Benchmade mini grip in S30v, some cheapie wal-mart shit, or a folding utility knife with replaceable razor-blades.

A knife is a handy tool to have, and something to play with when you're bored. I'm always cleaning my nails and cuticles with mine when I'm sitting around.

    You were imagining correct.

Not the best tool for the job, but works in a pinch.

Depends on the metal and even then I'm not sure I would use any of my knives like that.

    To each their own.

That's why I'm such a huge fan of S30v. It does crazy shit, and still retains an edge.

As for the knives..... they are just like guns. It's a tool man, I don't keep them because they match my shoes.
