Everytime I walk into a LCBS I'm hit by a wave of manscent that you'd find only at a gangbang. A bunch of severely overweight/underweight dudes who haven't showered that week... and me, the underground comic book nerd.

But if you go to B&N/Borders/etc the Manga section is packed by jailbait chicks.

Why is there such a huge lack of chicks who are into American comics when honestly manga deals with the same things: overpowered characters, shitty storylines, etc.

(I'm bored at an airport, f St Louis)

I'm a chick... I've been going to my LCBS for 20+ years now :o

You just go to the wrong comic book store? :mamoru:

Actually when I go in I'm usually surrounded by boys, and sometimes they give me looks like "What the hell is a girl doing here" even after so long. :dunno:

i hate getting into comic book conversations...espically NOT in a comic book shop. the only conversation is who could kick wolverine's ass and what it would take to kill him. i mean, i love the character and all...but i could only carry on a serious conversation over comics with people making referances to something like Invincible to spider-man or nior books like sam noir or criminal. everything else is just like a pissing contest over who thinks who could put the nail into wolverine's coffin.

Nearly half the 12 person staff at my local shop are female, including one of the owners, and they are the only girls/women I ever see in there. I think the whole reason for it is that it's so hard to catch up with the main line series (ff, x-men, dd, hulk, batman, supes, etc), as opposed to manga where they can literally buy the first volume in the same purchase as the 26th.

That and with manga you can usually expect next to no change in the art, character plot-line, and depth of story throughout the entire story. I mean come on, how many retcon's has a single original x-man gone through since the beginning?

Bullshit... it's no harder for a girl to pick up on a story than a guy :ugh:

The reason is because there is a sterotype of comics being a "guy" thing. I am so glad I never believed that. Sadly, way to many girls out there think its true... just like, I'm sure, most of you males wouldn't want to take up knitting because it's seen as a "Girl" thing.

You're right it isn't, but it also requires effort, which most girls aren't willing to put into actually learning it all.

Truthfully I would love it if more girls got into comics, my current g/f will go through twenty volumes of a manga series that centers around a fucking detective agency, but won't touch a comic of similar nature (x-factor investigations) simply because she would have to go through the process of learning about jamie madrox or rahne sinclair.

I was lucky to get her to read transmetropolitan, and that only worked because I had all 60 issues readily available and there was no back story to learn.

That's just lazy reading... I can't get my hubby to read any of mine either :dunno: it's no harder than coming into a TV series the second season or something.

Which is how most girl's approach comic reading (if they don't scorn it outright). Which is too bad, cause I think a lot of them would actually enjoy it.

What, I'm the only one older than you?

I can't knit, but I can machine sew far better than most guys. In my family it was "do it yourself 'cause no one else will do it for you" so I started using it as a kid and eventually I ended up doing upholstery for a while.

No, I'm still older than you... You were just born before I started collecting comics :o

That's how my mom taught me to braid my own hair  and I hated it for her.
