Solo should win easily, since the Kirk vs. Riker thing will split the Trekkie vote. :big grin:

Seriously - Who's the best semi-renegade bad-good-guy character? Who is the best commander? The best at getting chicks? The best fighter? The best bullshitter?

    Best overall?

I had to go old school and vote for Kirk. He's the coolest of all of them. Han Solo is a close second, but Kirk edges him out because he's OG. He's the one the other two characters were based on, I think.

Lucas had been working on the movie for years before it got made...

Hell, Han was part of the Kenobi charactor in the first few drafts (he was more like the charator in Phantom Menace as first concevied) before it was made into two charators... of course he was rescuing "Princess Luke" before Leia made an appearance as well. :dunno:

Lucas based it more on the old serial from when he was a kid, such as Flash Gordon (who Kirk was sorta based on as well) & the like then he would have ever thought to base them on Star Trek folks.

That's a good point, but I honestly think it's pretty well impossible to write a science fiction story and NOT be influenced by Star Trek. That's like playing basketball and not admiring Michael Jordan's or Larry Bird's talent.

There's a lot of Kirk in Solo, and you're right - there's a lot of Flash in both of them. :) When exactly did Lucas start work on SW? Trek was running back in 1963, I think. Not sure, exactly, since that was many moons before I was born, and I can't get to IMDB from work.

TOS ran from 1967 to 1969

It's easy to play basketball & not think of MJ or Larry Bird... If you played before they did. :dunno:

As Possum Stomper said, Star Trek started in 1967.

George was born in 1944. I know he had the basics for the show when he was a late teen/early 20's... before he was 23 for sure. He was working on getting into the biz by 1965, & he had the idea before he was able to do that...

As I said, he got the bug from nickolodian serials he'd watch as a kid. I'm not trying to say he was finished with the story before ST... but he had the basics there before it, & was influenced by earlier stuff... just like Gene Roddenberry had been.

Sure, but during the 10 years of revisions when star trek was alive, I refuse to believe he couldn't have been influenced by it. Even Jordan's and Bird's contemporaries who started before they did admired them.

    10 year of revisions??

5 tops... it took him forever to get people to back him, & he had the story finalized (well as much as he does) way before then.. & it took about the same amount of time to do the shooting, special effects & whatnot. He had to start filming in '74 & have the story done at least a couple of years before that....

now I'm gonna have to go look shit up.

Riker always looked liek he was trying to ram something with his forehead when he walked.

Kirk was spoiled by Shatner's acting.

Han Solo was a gun fighter and smuggler in the future. He's just too cool.

Come on, Han by a long shot. For the most part both Kirk and Riker were both yes men. Riker would follow Piccard's(sp) orders, who IMO was waaaay better than Riker, and Kirk aside from the movies didn't do anything that cool. Who was a hero of the rebelion against the Empire, Han. Who was a deciding factor in taking down the Death Star, Han. Who was able to give the business to a princess and have children that could've been the most powerfull jedi ever, Han.
