Just whoring though, picked this up a few weeks ago.... hoping to add a Marlin 917VR .17HMR rifle soon.

Bought it at Costco, brand new aluminum door for 06, better than the boring green model it replaces. Cheap only 380 CDN, electronic lock with key back up.

I keep thinking about getting one of those 500 lb Winchester safes at Wal-Mart. That thing would be a bitch to get in my basement, though. I'd be tempted to just keep it in my garage but I wouldn't feel comfortable with it there. I'll probably end up getting one of the mid sized ones. I can see myself growing out of it quickly, though.

get a dolly with pneumatic tires, and remove the door before taking it in the basement

My dad broke two of his steps getting his safe into his basement. There's no door to my basement so that part's no biggie. I'm more worried about replacing steps than anything :hs:.

I am looking at safes and the ones that are fire rated are like 700-800 bucks, I just need one for 3 rifles and my main concern is keeping them safe from my kid and maybe putting other stuff in the safe. Worse case if I did have a fire my home owners insurance would replace my guns, is fire safe really that important..
Its like 300-400 for a good solid safe and like 700-800 for a fire safe.

Any places to look, I looked at Sams, Walmart already and selection is kinda limited.

Check around at differant Wal-Marts. Some of the Wal-Marts in my area have them and some don't. They're on clearance for $500 when I do see them. They're fire rated to 1200 degrees for 30 minutes or something like that. The best I've seen is 1400 degrees so I guess that's good enough.

I've got a 550lb. Winchester Walmart safe w/ digital lock. It is nice and wasn't too bad to get up my steps and into my house. My only downfall, it is full and another safe is needed; the only problem -- nowhere to put a third safe.

I think most firefighters know ammunition cooking off is no danger to them.

How do they know there are firearms in the house before they enter? Do they ask the homeowner if he is present?

What about people who have a loaded gun or revolver in a night stand or something. Those cooking off WILL do some damage.
