So I use shell alot while I'm at work. While I don't (yet) have root access to our servers, I am stuck using my dedicated servers shell to run commands (easier for me). Weird thing is, when I run a WHOIS search, 4/10 times it will come back with a domain name not found / registered, yet when I log onto network-tools.com it shows the correct information / registrar information.

Any ways to add WHOIS hosts / search engines to the whois function of servers?

Are there any other kind of network tools that are useful in the webhosting industry to trouble shoot connections, etc etc?

Whois allows you to specify the server on the command line.

    whois -h whois.godaddy.com domain.com

You can create aliases in your profile so that who = /whois -h whois.server to save you some typing.
