Cliffs so far: No FTF anymore, License required just to *own* "Qualifying Firearms", which is anything but a pump, bolt, or lever gun (or, well, an SKS)

    Interesting... no grandfather provision.

An attempt at straight-up licensing and registration. It would be litigated instantly upon passage - probably all the way to the Supreme Court; and possibly be shot down by the Supremes as a needless encumbrance on an individual's right to exercise their Second Amendment rights. The fact that it is shall issue is about the only thing that doesn't make it instantly unconstitutional.

Of course, 90% of the bills proposed every year go nowhere beyond their introduction in committee. This one bears watching but unless it attracts sponsors and is referred to committee then subcommittee it's just another legislative fantasy.

I believe it to be too restrictive to even worry about. Its basically retro-active gun registration on a national level that that would make a felon out of anyone who doesn't register their currently owned firearms. I don't see this as a substantial threat.

Ideal end for this, esp. since it's been a week with no co-sponsors signing on:

It sits in Judiciary Committee, basically tabled indefinitely, until the legislative session expires or the bill times out, with no further action taken
    OR
the Committee realizes it's a dumbass move at a time when 2nd Amendment rights are making big gains, and kills it more quickly.

I'll be writing my Representative, asking him to oppose this if it ever leaves committee.

I hate it when people say that shit. It has nothing to do with the President, Congress passes the law and it goes to his desk and he either signs it into law or he doesn't. Period.

And he will sign something like this into law. So we need to be proactive and make sure this kind of stuff doesn't make it that far.

While it's true, the President doesn't have a direct role in getting something through Congress (i.e. a vote), he does have the power of the "bully pulpit," as I believe Teddy Roosevelt called it.
What the President can do is speak on the subject, advocating the passage of this bill, and people (his more sheep-like supporters in particular) may write, call, fax, email, and generally communicate to their Representatives and/or Senators, voicing their approval for this bill. He (the President) can also talk with Senators or Representatives on the side, do some wheeling and dealing with them (LBJ was notorious for this, being a former Senator and fairly powerful one at that, IIRC), make deals with them to support this bill that he likes or wants to see passed.

Then he gets to sign it once that's all taken care of.

So, a President who is in favor of this bill is, while not directly a vote in favor of it, still very capable of acting to get the bill passed.

I'll still be writing my Representative who, though a Dem, is also one of the Blue Dog Coalition (or whatever they call themselves, exactly) of moderate/conservative Dems, and who has, I think, an A rating from the NRA. Naturally, I'll be asking him to keep an eye on this bill and oppose it to the fullest extent possible.

I hope y'all do the same for your elected representatives, regardless of whether you think it's a lost cause. Every voice counts.

It should be DOA with no co-sponsor but still scary as fuck.

  22. This has as much chance of passage as a bill making my cat the president.

You guys are aware that the legislators don't always write bills, right? This bill was probably handed to this representative as a pre-written bill by some loony anti-gun group, and he just submitted it. This shit happens all the time.

pretty early in the session but I hope that the lack of cosponsors is an early sign of failure.
