When I first was going to post this, I was going to put Heinlein's Mobile Infantry (from Starship Troopers - the book, not the movie) against Imperial ground forces, but then I realized that wouldn't be much of a fight. As badass as the Imperial Navy is, the MI wouldn't have any trouble against an army that lost to a bunch of teddy bears. The only exception is the AT-AT walkers. They're pretty badass, as long as they don't trip.

So instead, Who in the Science Fiction world would be competition in battle for the MI? These guys have powered armor (sort of like the loader in Aliens but full body and with jump jets) and an incredible amount of armament and accessories, including infrared vision and nuclear rockets.

Sort of like this (although that's not exactly how I pictured it):
    http://www.trooperpx.com/RSTC/WebJPG/RazHig.jpg
    http://www.trooperpx.com/Database/RSTCorig/PowerSuitX.jpg

    Rules:
It has to be ground forces. No nuking the entire site from orbit. Even though it's the only way to be sure.
We should probably leave out magic. We're in a technological world. Besides, even Gandalf would be vaporized by a nuclear blast.

Post up. Who would stand a chance? (besides the Bugs)

Space Marines would rip them apart. A contigent ofaround 1000 is easily capable of taking on a planet. Not to mention if we threw in some Warhounds to take on anything big.

I'm not saying it's not possible, since I'm not familiar with space marines. But have you guys read Starship Troopers? Ignore the movie - the book is totally different, and it wasn't just kids in breastplates with rifles. The powered armor weighed in at 2000 lbs, fully enclosed them, and amplified their own strength several dozen times. The rifles are equipped with several different types of ammo including explosive rounds. They're able to jump over buildings and lift several tons with ease in the powered suits. In short, they're pretty rough characters.

And your marines at least seem to have their heads exposed. What are their advantages and how are they armed? They don't exactly look soft either.

Normally SMs don't have thier heads exposed.

Thier normal weapon is calt a Bolter, fires solid/explosive .75 Cal rounds. Usually they have a sidearm for hth fights. Some have weapons that are kinda infused with a ton of electricity, which melts armor around the blade...basically slicing through metal like butter. They're called Power Weapons.

The 1st company of a Chapter (a SM division) use Terminator armor, which looks like this:

There things are nasty. don't want to fuck with 'em.

they can get around in a lot of different tank varients:

and don't get me started on Dreadnaughts :o

There are assault troops on jetpacks, mounted on bikes, trikes, heavy weapon squads, assassians.. you name it.

i'd say that the infantry in Joe Haldeman's "The Forever War" and "Forever Peace" would fight them to a Draw, because they basically have the same armaments :mamoru:

oh, and the time-shifting AI machines in Endymion and Rise of Endymion (Dan Simmons) would eat them up for breakfast. basically they can manipulate the flow of time and move "ultra fast" - so they could destroy an entire batallion before they knew that they were being attacked.

The Eldar don't have power armor though, in the game they only have S3, which is average, where a Marine has S4.

They wear a light mesh armor, and can move faster.

The Starship Troopers book is 1000x better than the movie. And, it has the bonus that you'll probably enjoy the movie more once you've read the book and know what's really going on. It's not about bug wars - that's just the setting. It's a great book. I'm reading it again now, in fact.

You should be able to pick up the paperback at Barnes & Noble or Borders for like $6.
