Okay here's a theoretical question for everybody who might know an answer.
Who would be stronger after some period of time:

    - Man benchpressing the same weight as his body X number of reps

    OR

    - Identical man doing pushups for exact same X number of reps

Both exercises target the same muscle group and all factors considered are the same the only difference is 1 is pushing his body weight up through a barbell while the other is pushing his body weight up off the ground.

Can you answer the question correctly? :noes:

durrr bench press. you aren't pressing your full bodyweight with a pushup.

strength/size comes with adaptation to new weight. pressing the same weight iwll get you nowhere.

Factoring out other things previous posters have said... bench press is probably better since it takes more to keep the bar stabilized. Pushups are easy to keep your balance.

    Okay then, heres another question.

    Who would be stronger/bigger:

    Same situation

    A. Person doing 100 pushups

    OR

    B. Person doing 10 reps benchpress bodyweight

The second person. I think I heard doing pushups is roughly equivalent to benching with ~65% of your bw, so the second guy is using more weight. The first person is doing more reps, and his TUT is undoubtedly longer, but his weight is substantially lower and after a certain TUT you're no longer building "strength," but "endurance" instead, so the first guy would have more endurance but the second guy would be stronger (ie. he would have a higher 1RM). The second guy wouldn't be able to do 100 pushups, tho.

its harder to control the weight on the bar than holding your body up.
