I've run some marathons, but this totally got me motivated to do even more.

Can you imagine running 2,700 km to see the pyramids? Fucking awesome.

I have a friend who did this 150 mi trek across the Sahara that lasted for a week. Would run 25-50 miles a day, and they had to carry all their supplies on them--food, sunscreen, first aid stuff, water. They had water stations along the way, but that was it.

The point is just to complete it, to experience that. Not speed.

Can you imagine the runner's high from doing something like that lol!?!

no but I can imagine the third degree burns and resulting skin cancer my pasty ass would have after being out in the desert for longer than 15 minutes :p

In the documentary, they all start off varying skin tones, and by the end are dark, dark brown with awesome sunglass-tans lol.

Rather than sun lotion, there is this heavy duty sun cream that penetrates deeper into your skin and provides more protection. That's what they use for the 150 mi Sahara and the ultras in Death Valley I know. They're all also wearing long sleeve shirts and caps, with knee-length compression shorts. I've only had my legs burn once on a run before, so I don't think that's of too much concern.

I'm curious how many pairs of shoes they went through. The heat must have melted the soles.

yeah I saw a documentary on the death valley ultra one time, shit was intense. The person they followed had serious foot blisters and their feet were bleeding everywhere by the time they finished.

Not to mention the heat, dehydration, etc. Anyone who does one of those has some serious balls.

This guy I know ran for the UK at the 150 mi one; his friend completed the Death Valley ultra with Dean Karnazes a couple years ago.

I remember how years ago, I contemplated a marathon and thought it was impossibly ridiculous. Now it's like.. ha, how far can I really go...?

My mom lives in a town that's a stop for the Pacific Crest Trail. It's a 2k+ mile hike that 20+ people a year go on. http://www.pcta.org/about_trail/faqs.asp

Pretty cool. She works at the grocery store so she talks to a lot of them getting supplies and she says most are college age kids.
