Although Phillip Seymour Hoffman is close, I think Daniel Day-Lewis is the best actor. I think that his performance as Bill The Butcher in Gangs of New York was the best performance by any actor in any movie...ever. Then, he came back and played Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood brilliantly.

Denzel is pretty good too, but Day-Lewis just has a much broader range of acting. Denzel tends to have the same personality in most of his movies.

As for actresses....it just seems like men blow the women out of the water when it comes to acting. Maybe Meryl Streep?

have to agree with Daniel Day-Lewis

    otherwise i'd go with:
Robert Downey Jr (KISS KISS, BANG BANG)
or even Val Kilmer (The Doors)

    can't think of an actress

I suppose it's important to discern between best and favorite. Because I would have mentioned natalie portman but she's not always that great. Definitely agree with Daniel DL, he goes fully into the roles when off the set and I find that badass.

Daniel Day Lewis but also Jarvier Bardem is really good too not just in No country for old men but also some of his previous work in Spanish cinema. For women all I can think of right now is Helena bonham carter.

    Well...

    In terms of actors (male)?

Not sure. Never was a fan of Daniel Day-Lewis, though he's turned in some very good work over the years.

I have an easier time with actresses...

    Kate Winslet perhaps.

Never cared much for Meryl Streep.
