I'm pondering replacing my old tripod and getting a whole new setup either all at once or piece by piece.

I've been eyeballing a few ball heads like the Really Right Stuff BH-40 or BH-55 (overkill I suppose), Kirk BH-3 (I've heard mixed things about the tension control on this) and Markins as well. Arca Swiss is obviously the traditional choice but having used some other heads and the Arca Swiss', I'm stumbling around on what to get.

Primarily some moderate sized lenses (70-200 2.8 sized, sometimes a bit heftier) and a 1D MK II will be riding on top, but I need to keep flexibility to handle medium format and lighter large format gear.

Anyone have any experience with any of those heads and have any opinions?

if you are going to use a 300L or bigger, than get one of those. othewise on a 70-200 or under, they're all overkill. They're damn nice heads, but overkill

I have some chincy 488rc2 for a ball head, then have a squeeze handle head and a pan tilt head. they all work fine for a 1d2 and 70-200, with the squeeze handle being the least sturdy.

How well does it hold? I thought I read it was a little flimsy with a camera/lens of any size on it.
