Most of the NCO's in the new unit i'm going to Iraq with have them, however the NCO's in my company do not have them.

Does it just depend on the unit, or is there a rule on who gets them? (NCO's, platoon sergeants + commanders, etc...)

Does everyone with a weapons MOS like 0351, 0352, etc. carry a rifle as well as their other weapon like a Dragon/SMAW, etc.? What about 0331's who are in vehicles?

I had an M4 in 1999 in an MI unit... I have no idea how we got them so early, I would have figured an MI unit would never get new weapons, our .50 cals were ancient and barely worked...

It's been prooven in Iraq that at closer ranges the pistol is far more dangerous than anything else period? Why? I'm sure all of you know this but it's worth repeating, the pistol was a show of authority in their old society and was the primary means of execution. You could shove a Mk19 in a hajis face and he wouldn't flinch but whip out a M9 and he'll be on his knees begging for his life.

    They do have their uses.

the m4 is not the end all weapon. its nice for MOUT going around corners and whatnot, but it isnt always the ideal

actually, i prefer the a2 over my a4. the post is nice, but the rest of the handguards i hate, and also i dont like the balance

We had M16A4's in Army OSUT at Benning. I'm not sure if they've transitioned to M4's yet. We use M4A1's. Semi & Auto.

because you're in a guard unit... the guard is issued better weapons because the state pays for them.

The a4 is nice if you're a gear-queer or NAVY Seals or something, but for the basic infantryman, i'd prefer the a2.

Taking off a hand guard shouldn't be that hard. When I rule the world, m-16's will have hand guards that latch on and off, not some stupid jigsaw puzzle that I throw a fit like a 4 year old girl when I try to get it off.

Plus I couldn't even imagine holding up the a4 by the barrel when the DI's are incentive cough hazing cough training recruits.

my buddy is on the rifle range with the m4..he said its pretty accurate at the 500. my unit is still sporting the a2. i talked to the armorer and asked if we would be getting m4's or a4's for our next deployment next feb, he said they are trying to get some a4's but to not hold our breath.

i don't get why they army doesn't completely replace the M16 with M4s... A smaller weapon is easier to maneuvre through a vehicle and that's where the majority of shit goes down in our current situation in iraq. if they think we should paint all of our vehicles tan, why not give us weapons that are current with our operations...

You are part of a signal unit right? Do you guys go on patrols alot or do you hang back and work in a commo shack? If you aren't patrolling and clearing buildings or operating from vehicles then there isn't a huge benifet replacing the M16's with M4's when the M16s are still in good working order.

My cycle was the first to get M4's at Ft Benning. Also the last to get BDU's sadly.
