I picked up a free printer, a Dell 3110cn, but it didn't come with any toners. I dont know if it even works because the first self test it does after powering on is check for toners. I need to buy some toners to find what, if any, additional work needs to be done on it. But obviously if the machine is not salvageable I dont need $400 worth of toners for it.

I've never heard of any place taking back open toner. Considering the costs of toner, I would consider just buying another printer, unless the free printer you got is particularly good.

x2. Unless it's one of those $2000 color lasers that can crank out 30 pages per minute at full-resolution, there's no point in buying brand-new toner cartridges for a printer that may not last until they run out.

Maybe you could go to one of those cartridge world places and see if they can help you out, with "testing" the quality of their toner.
