If one is trying to lose weight the American Heart Association says that cutting calories is the way to do it. White bread has fewer calories than wheat bread but from everything I have ever heard wheat bread is supposed to be better. So for losing weight, which is better, white or wheat?

Wheat can tend to make fat people fatter. White is worse than wheat.

Spelt and sprouted grain breads are higher in protein and more complex than white or wheat flour. Millet is another less palatable choice.

id say go with wheat, but with moderation, depending on how much weight you are trying to lose, you might wanna give up bread for like a week or two

Earthgrains makes some good wheat bread... it's high-fibre and I think has 5 grams of protein per slice. 110 calories per slice, and tastes pretty good. Put some lean meat in and you have a 25-30g protein sandwich for ~300 calories that's also pretty heart-healthy.

anything whole grain and less processed is going to be higher in fiber, higher in micronutrients, etc.

If you have to eat bread (which if you are really being strict you shouldn't) it needs to be as unprocessed as you can find.

A simple way to diet is to eat around the outside of the grocery store. You will usually only find fruit, veggies, meats, dairy and eggs. Make a quick trip down the rice isle and you are pretty much set.
