    Here's the config...

    An Compaq DL580 / 6400R configed as...

    4x 550mhz Xeon's 2mb L2 with 4gb RAM. 64bit SCSI etc,etc,etc..

    or....

    1x 3.0ghz HT P4 1mb L2 with 1.5 GB RAM (ddr333) that'll never be upgraded.. IDE-HighPoint RAID 5

Either I'll run Fedora(compile custom 2.6 kernel) or Windows 2k3 Adv..

But which one do you think would handle more ?

    Thanks for the input...

depends what for. If for regular use/games easily the p4. And chances are the SCSI is pretty damn weak on the Xeon system. Ultra40 or maybe 80 I would think.

Well, if you look at the post, I wouldn't be using Fedora(linux) or Win2k3 Server for playing games....

    so...

the SCSI is Ultra160, but disk I/O will be at a minimum...

just currious about processor power more then anything.

"some" file serving... but mostly MySQL /web stuff... and storage...

and then on the local network, just pulling files to and from...

but sometimes, when queries get run, or large files get pulled... just was currious which one would "be there" CPU wise...

I think that the P4 will have a sheer processing advantage, but the 4x Xeon has a lot more RAM and its made for that kind of work. I think its a toss up.

I have a 4x Xeon 550/2M server too, but its been temporarily decommissioned though because it uses $30 worth of electricity a month.

    Thinking about it... 4xSCSI 72gb 10k RAID's will use more juice then 2x 320gb IDE RAID-1

    1 p4 against 4xXEON's sucking juice...

4 Xeons will suck juice, but then file-serving is a highly parallel, lightweight task. For the most part (i.e. unless you're using it in a big company), database serving is also pretty lightweight. It just takes a lot of storage space. I'd go with the Xeons.

Running 3dmark on a file server is pointless. It's a FILE SERVER, not a gaming rig. There's no reason to care how well it would run gaming-biased tests. And besides, the guy might not have the hardware yet anyway.
