    My parents got a new computer today and told me I could have the video card it came in it since it had on board video but I'm not sure if I should switch it over. My gut tells me since my current card (Nvidia 7900GS) only supports Direct X 9 that the new ATi card that I have would be better since it's a DX10 card. My computer friends are telling me "not necessarily".. I'm think WTF?

    So which one do I keep? The 7900 or the ATi Sapphire HD 3650?

    lol, thanks! :mamoru:

    basically,...

    HD3650 = low end DX10 card
    7900GS = mid range DX9 card

    so,...
    HD3650,... you'll get DX10 eye candy, but the card sucks for gaming
    7900GS,... you'll get better FPS, but no DX10 eye candy.
    which one is more important to you?

    The only game I've ever played on my computer is Counter Strike lol
    I'm more worried about how well video is displayed on my TV or computer monitor. But DX has nothing to do with that right?

    CS is a DX9 game so there's really no benefit with the HD3650.
    and since the card sucks,... it will only run slower.

    DirectX pretty much handles most of Window's multimedia components.
    it is a collection of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)
    e.g.
    Direct3D API (for games, CAD, etc).
    DirectXMedia API (for video)
    DirectSound API (for audio)
    ... and so on

    so for video playback,... the HD3650 will have better media support since its more modern.

    also,... your monitor or TV also plays a big part on how well the video is displayed.

    I think I'll go with the new card then... I haven't even played a game on my computer in at least 6 months...

    Thanks for the help! I wonder how well it'll work with Win7 RC... I just installed it :x:

    the thing about Windows 7 is that it has this feature called WARP
    if you have a DX9 vid card, and a DX10 app,... WARP will use the CPU so you can have DX10. it will be slower though compared to a real DX10 vid card.

    Vista doesn't have this.

    nothing changes though.
    7900GS is still better for gaming
    HD3650 for video playback

    don't worry about DX11 yet

    Thanks for your help Doomsday... I haven't played an actual real game in months.

    With that being said, I decided to swap to the HD3650... :big grin:
