So yeah. Finally getting my .50 upper. Choices are between 10x, 16x, and 20x. What magnifications would be good for shooting what ranges?

I've never done much with optics. Help me out OT

sure if you know of one under 400 dollars that will handle .50 bmg

  4. A .50BMG upper for what? An AR15 platform?

Magnification depends on what you're shooting and how far away it is.

    yea ar15.

as far as magnification, give me some examples where you would use each one :x:

  6. My dad is running a Nightforce benchrest 12-42x56 on his McMillan. If you are interested in shooting small groups at long range, you'll want something real high powered. If you're shooting at intermediate ranges you can get away with something with less magnification. PM phrozenlikwid if you want really good scope advice. Keep in mind that you'll need some heavy duty rings, and a real good scope to take the punishment from the .50

Also, how well do the ARs take .50 bmg? I can only imagine the recoil punishes the lower much more than was ever intended by the designers.

    Iron sights.

Seriously, if you're popping 50 BMG, I'll bet you'll be able to afford trying a few out.

Wait, is this .50 BMG or .50 Beowulf? I didn't think the .50 AR's had the serious range that requires high mag glass? I could be very wrong though...

But to answer your original question, I would say 16x for a variable but for a fixed I would think 10x is probably fine. Maybe 16 but all depends on what you're doing. Either way I bet 20x is nearly cheating unless you're doing serious long range stuff.

AR's dont have the mag well OAL for a 50bmg, i mean not even close.

Im thinking this has to be for a .50 Beowulf

And you want a scope less than $400 but are willing to spend $5 a shot?

It's probably a single shot upper.

Either way bitching about wanting to spend 400 or less on a 50bmg is kinda  when one shot cost around $4-5

I assume you are only looking at super snipers?

If so, that's a little different of a question. If not, this is just a bad question. I'm firmly In the camp that the game in optics is not to collect the most X's.

What kind of stuff are you going to be shooting, and at what ranges?

    :ugh: 4 to 5 dollars:ugh:

yea ive been looking at the super sniper scopes

I honestly don't know what I'll be shooting. The place I'll probably shoot it at has a 1000 yd range so I'd like to try that out. Most of the time probably 600-800yds. I really am not sure if I am going to keep it. I have to decide if I would shoot it enough.
