DPChallenge is doing a natural light portrait open challenge w/ advanced editing. I'm watching my niece tonight and I know I suck at portraits so I thought I'd snap a few and see if any were thought worthy of bothering to enter. Let me know what you like and what I should do to the pic to make it better. All pics have auto levels and some haev auto colors. I'm lazy.

15 with a tighter crop, and maybe get rid of the lamp.

4 seems to have the most even lighting across the face.

That's allowed in the editing rules, now to just see if I acn do it.

5, 14, and 15 were the ones I liked too, at least my choices are in line with you guys ;)

If the focus was better on 18 I'd like that too.

has nothing to do with photoshop.

make sure the eyes are lit up by the natural light. otherwise the eyes look dark with shadows.

i'd pick a picture where the baby's full face is lit up by the light, including the eyes. and also make sure the photo is in sharp focus. use some USM if needed, but don't over do it

4 is the best in terms of overall lighting.

I like 15, but i think the light/shadow on her face is uneven, and gives a very strange feel to the picture.

ahem... we do challenges here every 2 weeks but I don't think you've ever entered... :squint:

4 is my pic... just crop it tighter on her face to remove all the distractions in the background

Yea 4 lacks personality though. 14 and 15 are close, but like you said it's better in 14.

I haven't entered b/c the themes haven't caught my fancy as of yet. I work early so night photos are tough for me, and despite carrying my cam around I haven't found stuff for the others. I don't often enter challenges, and my best on dpchallenge is a 5.1098. The winner in that challenge got a 7.238.

I like 18 too, it would be my favorite if her eyes had caught light.
I have an A530, so not like I can be super picky about manual focus. I'm also still fairly new to it as far as doing non p-s pics. I dorked around with some settings here and there, but none are full auto.

All of the photos are shit. Here's a suggestion, go to a NORTH facing window. The sun is coming directly in that window and is producing WAY to contrasty of a scene. The lighting sucks to be quite honest.

This is the winner. Crop it tighter, portrait framing.
