This might just be a canon vs. nikon fanboy argument but is one of these better than the other?

    canon Rebel XSi

out of those 2 canon. the d60 doesn't have an autofocus motor which eliminates some lenses from autofocusing on it.

oh really, good to know. is there something you would recommend outside of these two?
also, how safe is it to generally buy from craigslist?

as long as you can test it before you buy it, i wouldn't have a problem buying used equipment. i would recommend a used canon 20/30/40d or a used nikon d80/90.

Tamron 17-50 in case he didnt know. That would be my advice too. I'm a Nikon boy and I hate the D40/D60's...such bullshit with their no-motor cameras

If you can find one without the lens, go ahead and get the body, then buy some better glass. the 18-55 kit lens is absolute garbage, in every sense of the word. you could also check out the new rebel T1i, which is just about to come out.. pretty badass internals on the rebel price point. as TheMan, and 240SX mentioned, the Tamron 17-50/2.8 is a great budget lens, producing results that you'd expect out of a more expensive chunk of glass.
